People often want to know what exactly the difference is between porcelain veneers and dental crowns. While these two treatments are similar, they do serve different purposes. In fact, if you have multiple issues with your teeth, your dentist may recommend a combination of veneers and crowns in order to give you the best and most comprehensive results.

Our Wilson cosmetic dentists have the skill and experience to properly assess your teeth and gums, listen to your concerns and goals, and come up with the right treatment plan for you. Call us at 252-291-2892 to make your appointment today.

Do You Need Veneers or Crowns?

The first thing to examine when deciding between veneers or crowns is the structural integrity of your tooth. If you have a lot of decay or your tooth is significantly damaged or weakened, a crown is probably a better choice. On the other hand, if your tooth has minor cosmetic imperfections but is overall healthy and strong, a veneer may be better.

Dental crowns are often used for teeth which are more subject to forces such as chewing, as crowns are stronger than veneers. Porcelain veneers are generally used only for the front teeth, in order to disguise imperfections and create a uniform, beautiful smile.

What Is The Difference Between a Dental Crown and a Porcelain Veneer?

So what is the difference between these two treatments? We’ve laid out some of the main differences below in order to give you a better idea of which treatment type you may need.

Porcelain veneers are used if you have minor:

  • Chips
  • Cracks
  • Discoloration
  • Crookedness

Porcelain veneers are sometimes referred to as “instant orthodontics,” because they can be used effectively to give the appearance of straight teeth if you have minor crookedness. However, if you have teeth that are moderately to severely crooked, you may benefit more from an orthodontic treatment such as Invisalign which can actually straighten the teeth.

Dental crowns are used when you have:

  • Significant damage
  • Weakened teeth
  • Major decay

Crowns are also called “tooth caps” because they cover the entire tooth, not just the front. If your tooth has such significant damage that most of it needs to be removed, a crown can be used to protect the remains of your natural tooth and ensure that you keep your natural tooth root. Crowns are often used on the back teeth, but they can be used on teeth towards the front of the mouth as well if necessary.
