The Difference between Crowns and Porcelain Veneers

Both dental crowns and porcelain veneers can correct damaged teeth, or teeth that have some kind of flaw. The end result improves both the appearance and the bite function for our dental patients. However, they are not the same fix for every problem, and some patients may be a candidate for one and not the other.

Primary Differences between Crowns and Porcelain Veneers

• Porcelain veneers are bonded to the front surface of the teeth that can be seen when you smile. A small portion of enamel is removed to bond the tooth. Veneers are a good choice for stains, chips or cracks, worn teeth, and gaps
• Dental crowns are caps fitted over teeth usually at the back of the mouth. They are a good choice for teeth that are used for heavy chewing or biting, as well as teeth affected by teeth grinding. A significant amount of tooth reduction occurs in the placement of a crown. Crowns can be made with porcelain, gold, or zirconium
