Your temporomandibular joint is the joint in your jaw that combines hinge and side to side movement. To ensure smooth movement, the bones in this joint are covered with cartilage and separated by a shock-absorbing disk. When either the disk or cartilage in this joint becomes impacted, the result is temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD or TMJ).
Symptoms of TMD/TMJ
The most common symptom of TMD/TMJ is clicking or popping in your jaw when you chew. Other symptoms include:
- Pain or tenderness around your jaw
- Swelling in the face and neck
- Ear ringing
- Migraine-like headaches
Some of these symptoms may also manifest with other medical disorders. The neuromuscular dentists at our Wilson, North Carolina office are experienced in detecting and treating TMD/TMJ, helping eliminate these symptoms, and restoring your quality of life.
The painful symptoms of undiagnosed TMD are often treated with pain medications, but TMD is not always painful prompting some people to wonder why it should be treated at all. When left untreated, TMD can result in serious health issues including:
- Reliance on pain medications
- Sleep deprivation
- Extreme mood fluctuations
- Postural problems
Untreated TMD/TMJ can also lead to uneven tooth wear and deterioration of your jaw. This can, eventually, lead to tooth extractions and expensive restorative dental procedures.
Fortunately, during your biannual visits to our comfortable office for dental cleanings, one of our dentists will thoroughly check your TMJ to detect early signs of TMD. When detected, a simple customized mouthguard can be used to gently bring your jaw back into alignment, and prevent these unnecessary complications.
