Your temporomandibular joint is responsible for every movement your jaw makes. Cartilage damage, muscle strain, and forceful impact to this joint can result in temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD or TMJ), an often painful condition that can lead to serious health issues if not treated promptly.

Some of the symptoms of TMD/TMJ include:

These symptoms can be uncomfortable and interfere with your quality of life. However, due to their similarity to other oral and medical issues, TMD often goes undiagnosed.

Detecting and Treating TMD/TMJ

The experienced dentists at Ham, Dixon & Boles have completed additional training in neuromuscular dentistry. Neuromuscular dentistry is the branch of dentistry that focuses on identifying and treating problems with your temporomandibular joint. When you come to our office for your biannual examinations, one of our dentists will perform an evaluation of your joint to make sure it is functioning properly. If there is a problem detected with it, more testing will be required to detect the causes and develop a treatment plan.

Once your bite has been determined, a customized mouthguard will be created that will gently realign your jaw while you sleep. This mouthguard is created using sophisticated technology, and personalized on a patient by patient basis to ensure maximum comfort and effectiveness. Botox treatments have also been proven to a very effective method in relieving TMD.

TMD affects millions of Americans every year. The experienced dentists at Ham, Dixon & Boles can help treat your TMD, reducing pain, and restoring strength and function to your bite.
