Wilson, Greenville, Goldsboro, Rocky Mount, Raleigh & nearby areas
There are two types of gum disease: gingivitis and periodontitis. Of these, gingivitis is the most common and can often be treated by improving your at-home oral hygiene routine and visiting your Wilson dentist every six months for professional cleanings.
In some cases, we may recommend you also use a prescription mouthwash to prevent a reoccurrence of this mild form of gum disease. This will be based on your individual needs.
Periodontitis is a more advanced form of gum disease and can, when left untreated, result in tooth loss and other oral health issues. Worse still, this form of gum disease has been linked to heart attack, stroke, pregnancy complications, and most recently, an increased risk for Alzheimer’s, making it essential that you seek treatment as soon as possible.
Treating periodontitis will require scaling and root planning, a procedure in which the roots of teeth are deep cleaned. If the disease is left untreated for an extended period of time, oral surgery may be the only option, making it best to contact us at the first sign of gum disease.
